Shannon Clark & the Sugar – “Cool Waters”

Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Shannon Clark & the Sugar’s song “Cool Waters” from their forthcoming album This Old World, which is slated for release on September 8.  The album was produced by Justin Weaver, mixed by Mitch Furr, engineered by Jeremy Bernstein at Welcome to 1979; and mastered by Adam Grover.

“Cool Waters” is Shannon Clark on lead vocals and guitar; Brittany Clark on drums and percussion; Navie Clark on vocals; Joey Howard on guitar and vocals; Justin Weaver on guitar and banjo; Cactus Moser on percussion and drums; Chris Autry on bass; and Billy Justineau on keys. Starting out like a song from the Band with truly rich keys, this song is easygoing and chill.  Great vocals by Shannon with spine chilling harmonies.  “One thing I’ll never regret is those cool waters where it was just you and me.” Nice.

I love the light hearted vibe of this tune. I remember when Joey came into practice with this riff and I was like, ‘wow!’ That’s a summertime song if I ever heard one. As it developed I wanted it to be like Van Morrison’s ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ – just a nice, easy listen. But I wanted to have just a touch more country vibes.

I think we got pretty damn close. The heart of this song is Cactus Moser (Wynonna Judd’s Husband) and my wife Brittany, doubling up on the drumming. They gave this track such a solid groove; I’d say they are the hero’s on this one.

Overall this song is about young love and the first time you get a taste of it: pure, innocent and magical. – Shannon Clark
