Jana Pochop — “Matador”
Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Jana Pochop’s song “Matador,” from her forthcoming album The Astronaut, due to be released next year. The Astronaut was produced by Daniel Barrett (Ruthie Foster, Grace Pettis); mixed and mastered by Mark Hallman (Carole King, Eliza Gilkyson, Ani DiFranco, Salad Cleaves).
In addition to Jana Pochop, musicians on “Matador” are Sean Hutchinson (Bleachers, Taylor Swift, The Chicks, Lana Del Rey) on drums; Duke Levine (Mary Chapin Carpenter, Jonatha Brooke, Aimee Mann) on guitar; Lloyd Maines (The Chicks, Terri Hendrix, Joe Ely) on pedal steel, lapsteel, ukulele; Don Dixon (Mary Chapin Carpenter, R.E.M., The Smithereens) on bass; Ephraim Owens (Tedeschi Trucks, Sheryl Crow) on trumpet; BettySoo – (Nobody’s Girl) on accordion; Eric Holden (Shakira, The Bodeans) on bass; Brian Standefer (Alejandro Escovedo, Eliza Gilkyson) on cello; Frank LoCrasto (Okkervil River, Fruit Bats) on keyboard.
Pochop’s delivery is like a lighter, breezier Edie Brickell and every sound you hear on this song is pretty. But there is a dimension of absolute authenticity to it all.
This is a stumble around feeling ridiculously happy because someone is paying attention to you kind of song. Who makes the next move? Everything sounds amazing coming out of their mouth! I’ll follow them anywhere! Duke Levine’s guitar and Sean Hutchinson’s drums add to the swoon. –Jana Pochop
