Song Premiere: Last Birds “Meant to Be”

Listen & Watch Song Premieres

Americana Highways presents this premiere of Last Birds’ song “Meant to Be,” from their forthcoming self-titled EP.  The song was written and arranged by Lindsay Arnold and Mike Davis (Last Birds). The album Last Birds was engineered, mixed and mastered by Brad Prosko Productions and recorded at both Touchwood Studios in Regina, Saskatchewan and The Days Inn, Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada. The EP will be available on April 16.

“Meant to Be” is Lindsay Arnold and Mike Davis on vocals and acoustic guitar; Jayson Brinkworth on percussion; and Steve Hinson on pedal steel. There is a kind of genuineness that emerges in the Last Birds’ songs, born of an authentic life on the prairie. Check it out here.

“Meant to Be” is a love song but, despite the sentimental title, diverts from the usual fairytale. Instead the song reflects the long, often clumsy, journey to finding the right person and the right kind of love. Loving someone means growing up, fixing yourself first, and not relying on others to heal your wounds or change to suit your needs.

Lindsay wrote the lyrics for “Meant to Be” one summer while working at the post office in our small prairie town. Lugging her guitar to work, she would write in the afternoons when all was quiet. The post office was not an ideal location for writing a romantic song. It was cramped, rundown and smelled a little too much like cats. However, just like real love, songwriting doesn’t always happen under a perfect set of circumstances.

We also recorded this song under less than ideal circumstances. We started out at Touchwood Studios in Regina Saskatchewan and completed the instrument tracks before the pandemic hit North America. We were not able to return to the studio due to government health regulations. We ended up completing the vocals at The Days Inn in Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada. Working in two adjoining hotel rooms with our producer, Brad Prosko, turned out to be a very comfortable recording environment. In retrospect, we’re glad it turned out this way. — MikeDavis
