Back in September 2019, when the outside world functioned a bit differently, I met the talented musical duo Chase & Melia in Morrison, CO for a couple ‘smallsongs.’ I brought my wife Andy along to meet them, and we all related on everything from our time spent in Germany, to Red Rocks Church, to #vanlife. Since then our lives as couples have paralleled in various ways, including us both having our first babies due in July. I asked them a couple questions for this Americana Highways piece:
Q: When did you first start playing music & why?
A: We both grew up singing in choir, and we met in college studying music at MSU Denver. For both of us, we grew up in musical families and were always singing.
Q: What does your songwriting & creative process typically look like?
A: Since we consider ourselves vocalists first, we tend to lean towards covering songs with great harmonies and melodies. When songwriting, we usually start with a melody that one of us has thought up, and we build from there.
Q: How’d you two meet?
A: We met in college at MSU Denver while studying music. We became closer after being cast as romantic opposites in an Opera scene, and we’ve pretty much been a duo (in life and music) ever since!
Q: Who are your artistic & musical influences?
A: We love good singers! The band Joseph is a huge inspiration to us, their vocal ability and harmonies are just exactly the kind of music we love listening to and performing. We also love other singer songwriters like Chris Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, AURORA, and so many others.
Q: What all are you have planned for the future?
A: We are super excited for our future as we are expecting our first child (coming July 2020), but it’s put our summer performing season on hold a bit. Over the next year or two, we plan to buckle down and write/produce/release an album. We love live performing and we enjoy singing covers, but we’re really excited to create our own music and hope to share it with the world.
