Rachael Sage – “Albatross (featuring Crys Matthews”

Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Rachael Sage’s song “Albatross” from her forthcoming album Another Side.  The album was produced by Rachael Sage with Mikhail Pivovarov; and engineered, mixed, and mastered by Mikhail Pivovarov.

“Albatross” is Rachael Sage on vocals, acoustic guitar, and djembe; Kelly Halloran on violin; Dave Eggar on cello; Quinn on hand percussion (talking drum, udu, tympani, shaker); Mikhail Pivovarov on acoustic bass, piano, harmonium, percussion (cajon, bongos, goat toe, shaker); and Crys Matthews on guest vocals.

Rachael’s pretty, tremolo vocals ask us to consider probing, significant questions: “What does it mean to be human?” in this innovative, though-provoking song about who we ought to be.  Her talented songwriting is ever evolving, and this is a fascinating harbinger for the album to come, all over the backdrop of eclectic, natural instrumental arrangements.

“Albatross” is a chronicle of my emotional odyssey during the first few months of pandemic lockdown, and the first song I wrote for The Other Side. The chorus lyric ‘what does it mean to be human / what cruel misdeeds cannot be undone’ was a genuine question for me in those early days, when fleetingly, it actually seemed like this collective experience was going to unify us not only as a country, but as a planet. Then of course America was not-so-suddenly but inescapably facing racism and police violence head-on and in inconceivably dire conditions. Some of the lyrics grapple with the contrast of protests flooding our nation’s streets demanding justice, and millions struggling amidst a disease with no known cure. All these complexities – the preciousness of loved-ones, gratitude for essential workers, the fear of the unknown, inequality and mortality – were on my mind, and I had no answers…only a pen and a guitar to mark the moment…the legacy of which continues to be: how can we do better? – Rachael Sage
