Hayes Carll at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA
Hayes Carll kicked off his west coast tour to a packed house at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, California.
Hayes and his band played songs that spanned his career opening the show with a song from his third album, Trouble in Mind and arguably the song that in my mind put him on the map, “Drunken Poet’s Dream.”
Carll is on tour to promote his newest and perhaps his best album yet, We’re Only Human. The set included not only the title track from the album, but “Progress of Man (Bitcoin and Cattle),” “Stay Here a While” and “I Got Away With It.”
He also played a brand-new song, which according to him was “only the second time I’ve played this”, titled “I Feel Love Coming On.”
The rest of the set included such great Hayes Carll songs like: “KMAG YOYO”, “You Get It All” and “Faulkner Street.”
He included a cover of the late, great Todd Snider’s “Play a Train Song.”
For the encore, Hayes came out and did a solo acoustic version of “Beaumont” before the band joined him on stage once again for “Bad Liver and a Broken Heart” and “Stomp and Holler.”
Hayes and the band continue the tour up the west coast stopping in San Francisco and Sacramento before heading to Nevada, Oregon and Washington. Check for tour dates here: https://www.hayescarll.com
Opening the show was a talented songwriter with a great sense of humor, Ryan Montbleau. His set was short but very entertaining. Sometimes, reminding me a little bit of Paul Simon. Find more information here on his website: https://www.ryanmontbleau.com
