Thekioway “Cordillera”

Americana Highways presents this video premiere of Andean style band Thekioway’s song “Cordillera” roduced with album cover art by Victor Vildosola, mixed by Claudio Quiñones, and mastering by Tom Waltz. Thekioway is based in New York City, while this song features Chilean artistry. It includes an excerpt from the poem “Los Nuevos Pueblos” by Raúl Zurita, recited by the actor Héctor Noguera who recently passed away.

“Cordillera” is Víctor Vildósola on acoustic and electric guitars, electric bass, percussion, and  synths; Arturo de las Fuentes on vocals; Héctor Noguera on vocals; Matt Lambert on drums and percussion; and Pedro Villagra on woodwinds, charango, quena, flutes, and tenor saxophone.

This lyric video was directed by Víctor Vildósola with camera work by Sebastian Cerpa, Francisca Vildosola, and Víctor Vildosola. Héctor Noguera’s portrait was by Ari Espay.  Although the song and poem are sung and recited in Spanish, the expansive connection to the grandeur of nature transcends language. Even a non-Spanish speaker will enjoy.

As Victor tells us, about the song:“‘Cordillera’ is about the inner mountains we run toward when the world becomes too violent to bear. The verses speak to the wounds we inherit, the dead, the missing, the fears we carry, while the chorus offers a kind of refuge, a reminder that what we plant in the earth becomes part of us, that the soul can still turn into a star. And with Zurita’s poem, voiced by Héctor Noguera, the song becomes bigger than us: it connects our story to the rivers, tribes, and ancestral voices that live inside everyone.”

THEKOIWAY is performing at PAC NYC on Saturday January 31st: https://pacnyc.org/whats-on/thekoiway/
