Duncan Coker Roadside Attractions

Duncan Coker has a new album of red dirt country and Western style songs Roadside Attractions.   Duncan lives and writes songs in Colorado, where the country side of things is reflected in his songs about laying down our troubles, finding our way home, and holding onto memories of being fully alive.

“Rodeo Girl” adds flourishes of fiddle in a declaration of belonging with the one who’s been right there in front of you all along: “she’s how I know that I’m home, rodeo girl, blues jeans and curls, rodeo girl.”

“Started Missing You” keeps up the pace with lower fiddle accents and a tale of afternoon delights and heated passion from some time ago: “makes me wonder when I’ll see you again coming through the door and leaving by the window / started missing ya’, wonder if ya’ started missing me too.”  Listening, you wonder and hope that those days will return again now and then.

“Polly” is a rich song, changing the pace a bit in a description about the way things fade as time goes by and “wish that Pontiac would steal her away… Polly gave more than she needed … she was there but he didn’t see her,  now she’s gone, no one was meant to keep her.”  The electric guitars are lively as it opens out into a cathartic dance feel even as there’s a wistful tone in the lyrical story.

“How to Love In El Paso” is an old Western country two step and a prescription for how to do it in West Texas: “kick back by the hotel pool, drink bourbon all afternoon, doing what feels right, what more can you ask for, a cigarette and a lone star view…. that’s how to love in El Paso,”

Later in the album, “The Waters” adds bright, bold Southern rock sounding keys to a slower-tempo thoughtful song and “its time to reach out, time to reach in, let’s go down to the water, we can lay down all our trouble.” “Make It In Carolina” is a confessional, stripped down song, sweetly closing out the album with the pretty “my soul’s to be delivered, make it in Carolina.”
