Dave Miller “Nail Can”
Americana Highways presents this video premiere of Dave Miller’s song “Nail Can” from his forthcoming album Party in the Pines, which is set for release on January 2026 via Howling Dog Records. Party in the Pines was co-produced by Dave Miller and Don Richmond.
“Nail Can” is Dave Miller on lead vocals and acoustic guitar; Don Richmond on bass and mandolin; Lyn Jones on harmonica; and Abbye West-Pates on harmony vocals.
This video of Dave performing the song was shot and edited by Drew Fleming. The video is Dave playing the song next to a sawdusty workbench, with older footage of a father and young child working on the bench.
About the song, Dave says. “My dad passed away very suddenly when I was only 13 years old. He was a veteran, an elder in the church, a business owner, an activist for the integration of businesses and schools in the 50’s and 60’s, and a commercial artist. He was also a skilled builder and handyman who used materials he had at hand to make things we needed around the house. His red nail can was a magical and endless source of every type of hardware imaginable, and the image of it stands as a symbol of his self-reliance and creativity to me still.”
If you’re longing for some good folk music in the Woody Guthrie category, this is your new “go to.” Dave Miller makes rustic timeless songs of the type that you can almost hear the creak of the front porch rocking chair in the background. To accompany the rustic sound are lyrics like “And to me, it just seemed like magic / What he could build with his two hands / And the endless supply of hardware that he pulled out of that can / He said, “Son, life’s a little bit like this old nail can / How we use what’s inside Is it a rusty mess or a treasure chest. We each have to decide.”
