Grand Nathaniel “Away We Go”
Americana Highways is hosting this video premiere of Grand Nathaniel’s song “Away We Go” from his forthcoming album Lonely Wanderer, which is set for release on November 14. Lonely Wanderer was produced, engineered and mastered by J Burton, who says: “This album is produced and recorded by me! I learned record-making in the nineties (when that was still an actual industry) at Dockside here in Maurice, LA. I’m now limited unfortunately on budget/gear so I purposefully exploit the lo-fi vibe, as opposed to trying to hide it. I started out recording on a TASCAM Syncaset 4-track in about 1992.”
Musicians on “Away We Go” are J Bruton on vocals and synth; Brycen Gaddis on drums; David Crochet on bass; and Jessie Lalonde Devillier on keys and vocals. Again, as J Burton tells us, “When I started assembling a live-band for some shows to support At The Lagoon (2020), we ended up having so much fun together (myself, Brycen Gaddis (drums), Jessie Lalonde Devillier (keys and vocals), and David Crochet (bass)) that we started learning the new material and I ended up basically making a band by accident. No regrets whatsoever though, they brought a life and vibrancy to the music that I absolutely could’ve never done myself”
About the song, he says “‘Away We Go’ is certainly just what it sounds like. A celebration of crossing a threshold; stepping into a larger world, after passing by the supposed guardians that hold us at bay. It’s a call to let the sounds change, let the walls fall down, and a prayer to never become a repeater. Let’s make something new… ‘Away We Go.’ Like nearly every tune on Lonely Wanderer this one writhed and reeled for months and nearly years until it settled into its final form. Brycen ultimately came up with that drum part and it took on this rich, and darkly euphoric tone. It became a sort of luminous, cinematic hymn. Hopefully it makes the listener want to go outside and chase the horizon. I can’t say enough about how important the contributions from Brycen, Jessie, and David are on this record. They made it real.”
Radiation with reverb and reflection, “Away We Go” is an inspiration to take the plunge and just do it: “ooooo tell me it’s true, oooooo we gonna find something new.”
