Johnson & Finnemore “The Gun”

Americana Highways presents this premiere of Johnson and Finnemore’s song “the gun “from the forthcoming album Find A Love That Brings You Home. The album was produced by Johnson & Finnemore, mixed by Toby Wilson at Arc Studios, and mastered by Greg Chandler at The Priory Studios.

“The Gun” is Dan Finnemore (songwriter) on lead vocals and guitar; Stewart Johnson on pedal steel, dobro, guitar, and backing vocals; Hannah Johnson on duet vocals; Buzz Bywater on bass; Liam Grundy on piano and organ; Howard Gregory on fiddle; James Everhart on wah guitar; Joshua Friedman on drum machine; TBird on drums/skins; and Johnny Lee on horns.

As Dan says, “The track was penned almost 20 years ago but it never quite found its home or sound until now. It is a song about the weight of choices and the shadows they cast. Having Hannah (Johnson) sing alongside me turned it into a dialogue, almost like two sides of a conscience. We wanted it to feel like a conversation that lingers long after the song ends and Stew’s arrangement choices are just perfect for the track.”

A foreboding, loping Western beat with a certain dobro bounce sets this song up for bold confessions “everyone says that I’m a mess I don’t deserve the love I get, well I guess they’re right / well if you’ve got some love to spare, baby won’t you bring it on over here and do me right.” Self-doubt and the voices in your head just may be calmed and quelled by taking a chance at love, and Johnson & Finnemore take this on head – to – head and explore it straightforwardly with good old country musical style, without a trace of glossy embellishing.
