Pete Muller – “New York in the Rain”
Americana Highways brings you this video premiere of Pete Muller’s song “New York in the Rain” from his forthcoming album One Last Dance, which is set for release on November 14 via Two Truths Music. One Last Dance was produced by Pete Muller with associate producer Katie May and additional production by Rob Mathes. It was engineered by Katie May with assistant engineering by Maisy Preece, Matthew Sullivan and Henry Reinach. It was mixed by Katie May with additional mixing by Craig Alvin. It was mastered by Andrew Mendelson.
“New York in the Rain” is Pete Muller on vocals, piano, and background vocals; Andrew McNamara on drums, percussion, and background vocals; Skip Ward on electric bass; Eric Donnelly on electric guitar and acoustic guitar; Martha McDonnell on fiddle and background vocals, and with Rob Mathes on organ and David Silliman on percussion.
“I wrote ‘New York In The Rain’ with Nate Walker one afternoon in New York City,” says Muller. “I had just made some changes to my touring band, the Kindred Souls — it was emotionally tough. A band breakup can be as poignant as a romantic one. I channeled those feelings into this song, imagining myself walking through a summer rainstorm in the city — soaked, sad, but still open-hearted.”
Of the video, Pete says: “Gus Black directed the video (his fourth for me), filming us at Power Station’s Black Box Theater after capturing footage of me mouthing the lyrics for two and a half hours, getting drenched by rain machines the night before. Thankfully, it was 80 degrees — but next time, I won’t wear jeans!”
The video was directed by Gus Black and produced by Shayon Farooq. The video is instantly cool with dramatic lighting, the city skyline outside the window, and overlays of rain as Pete plays piano and the band plays at a high level. The level of command feels like they are on an arena stage. For visual effects, some of the rain was actually done with rain machines. It’s a polished song portrayed in the video with grandeur and adept showmanship. “Some things take a lifetime, some things just wash away.” The shifting patterns of light throughout the video are spectacular as well.
