Marty Cooper “Their Roof is the Sky”

Americana Highways brings you this video premiere of Marty Cooper’s song “Their Roof is the Sky” from his forthcoming album American Portraits, which is set for release on August 22 via Howlin’ Dog Records. American Portraits was co-produced by Marty Cooper and Don Richmond, and recorded, mixed and mastered at Howlin’ Dog Records in Alamosa, Colorado by Don Richmond.

“Their Roof is the Sky” is Marty Cooper on lead vocals; Don Richmond on bass, electric and acoustic guitars; Jimmy Stadler on piano; Mark Clark on drums.

The video was done by Robin Cranson of Cranson Photography in Alamosa, Colorado.

Marty Cooper is a lifelong songwriter, some of whose songs were recorded by other folks like Sammy Davis Jr, Stevie Wonder, Burl Ives, Bobby Bare and more. As Marty says of this album, “American Portraits began a few years ago as a personal retrospective when I decided to memorialize certain of my songs in a simple, timeless style. But there is a magic which sometimes happens with writing and recording and as I continued in the studio a theme I didn’t really know was there began to emerge: A questioning look at our America, past and present touching on diverse issues such as War, Baseball, Western Movies, Trains, The Homeless and even Yo Yo’s.”

In “Their Roof Is the Sky,” Marty confronts the experience of homelessness in the gentlest, most loving vocal tone you can imagine. There are far too many people without a roof overhead: “there is  a soldier from yesterday’s war, he doesn’t remember what the fighting was for. American dreams, American dreamers, where did they come from, where did they go?” The scenes in the video are raw and real and a necessary watch. The song could become a gentle protest folk song.
