Mike Hollon “Downhill Slide”

Americana Highways is hosting this video premiere of Mike Hollon’s song “Downhill Slide” from his forthcoming album Irving Park, which is set for release on October 17. This song will be available on August 22. Irving Park was produced by Dan Metzner and Mike Hollon, engineered and mixed by Dan Metzner, and mastered by Jeff Lipton at Peerless Mastering in Boston with assistance from Costanza Tinti. It was recorded at Stewart’s Empty House Studio in Lincoln, Nebraska.

“Downhill Slide” is Mike Hollon on vocals, guitars, ukulele, harmonica, auxiliary percussion, and backing vocals; Mitch Benson on bass; Jeremiah Weir on piano and Leslie organ; Kyle Carson on trumpet; and Dan Metzner on drum and percussion sequencing, auxiliary percussion, and backing vocals.

Bright, upbeat acoustic guitar sets the tone for this song about those times when you’re picturing everything working out right, and then, here comes that sinking feeling as obstacles keep cropping up to deflate the vision of a perfect day, a perfect life. “Uphill I climb, I keep hoping for a downhill slide.” Yep, every dang day.  Great message to address in a song, and a memorable set up too.

“Downhill Slide” is a song about a hangover’s despair. Trying to clear your mind, but the anxiety sets in, grabs a hold and it feels like an existential dread. The song started out that way, and it also evolved into trying to remain positive, when everything around you seems to be trying to make you into something else – Mike Hollon
