REVIEW: Unspoken Tradition “Resilience”

Reviews

Bluegrass/newgrass outfit Unspoken Tradition releases their latest album, Resilience, an album that reflects the feeling and personality of their home ground of North Carolina.

The band explains, “The songs on this album were recorded and released over several years. Each one carried its own meaning at the time, but like many creative works, their deeper significance revealed itself gradually. We chose to gather these singles under the title ‘Resilience’ because, together, they now speak to something more — something that fits the present moment.”

Made up of Audie McGinnis (guitar, vocals), Saravanan “Sav” Sankaran (bass, vocals), Zane McGinnis (banjo), Ty Gilpin (mandolin, vocals), and Tim Gardner (fiddle, vocals), Unspoken Tradition’s Resilience was produced by Jon Weisberger and Jeff Collins, and mixed and mastered by Scott Barnett at Crossroads Studio C.

Guest artists on the album include Danny Paisley (vocals), Jason Carter (fiddle), Bronwyn Keith-Hynes (fiddle), and Steve McMurry (vocals).

Of the seven tracks on Resilience, high points include “I’m In a Hurry (And Don’t Know Why,” the band’s cover of Alabama’s song, features a delicious sawing fiddle, and gleaming textures of guitar, mandolin, and banjo. Wistful and dripping with flavors of urgency, the lyrics narrate a feeling of surprised deliberation.

A personal favorite because of its rootsy surfaces and evocative vocals, “Georgia In Her Eyes” travels on swaying harmonic layers. While the poignant “I’ll Break Out Again Tonight,” featuring the luscious, drawling voice of guest vocalist Danny Paisley, along with triple fiddles, glides smoothly on luminous, plucking instruments.

Highlighted by silky, low-slung vocal harmonies, “Katie and Burl” immerses listeners in a twang-laced melody that ripples and glitters with bluegrass coloration. The lyrics reveal the struggles and small victories of life.

The last track, “Moments,” offers a banjo-driven melody accented by a see-saw fiddle, infusing the tune with hints of melancholy. Velvety vocals imbue the lyrics with aching tenderness and nostalgic longing.

Wonderfully arranged and charming, Resilience encapsulates a sense of place and hardiness via delectable bluegrass aromas.
