Verna Margaret – “Paper Cut”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Verna Margaret’s song “Paper Cut,” which was  co-written with Devon Geyer. The song was produced by Devon Geyer, mixed by Devon and Sean Kenney; and mastered by Sean. It was recorded at the Orange Crate.

“Paper Cut” is Verna Margaret on lead vocals and acoustic guitar; Devon Geyer on electric guitar, bass, and background vocals; Joel Martin on pedal steel; and Burleigh Drummond Jr. on drums.

Lots of songs that take up the idea of a forbidden fling take the heavy emotional path, but Verna takes another direction. This song takes up a nonchalant indifference to the whole thing. With a fluid arrangement that includes pedal steel and bright acoustic guitar: “He’s saying he’d risk it all for us, darlin’ I wouldn’t risk a paper cut if it meant I got to keep you by my side. I don’t wish me on anybody, no, not even you.”

There’s a long tradition of cheating songs in country music. And this is certainly one of them. Instead of moralizing, I’m much more interested in the self-centeredness and egotism of each of the characters. Just how mundane and trite it is to go through the motions before trying to start an affair, and the person you’re risking it all for couldn’t care less and just wants a free drink. But above all else, it’s just a fun, sleazy song. – Verna Margaret
