Bicentennial Drug Lord – “Iggy Pop”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Bicentennial Drug Lord’s song “Iggy Pop” from their upcoming album You Are Never Alone, which releases the 20th of June via Upstate New York’s Vfib Record. The album was produced by Alan Weatherhead and Alex Farrar, and recorded by Alex Farrar at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville, North Carolina. Cover design was by Damian Strigens and photos were courtesy of Mark Cherek.

“Iggy Pop” is Bicentennial Drug Lord: John Daniels on vocals and bass; Rick Donner on vocals, guitar, and harmonica; and Alan Weatherhead on vocals, guitar, keyboards, and lap steel; with Kevin Rumley on drums and percussion.

“Iggy Pop” is sonically dark and tonally dirty as the song is a flashback to better times. It’s about a good friend who would bring folks together and the good times that were had: “back where it began, dancing alone in the bar, coming in close until it feels like living, all I want is to hang on to this feeling.” The darkness descends because the friend has passed on, but the memories remain. Confronting mortality always carries a little dose of pain. This song captures it all with an electric rootsy feel.

Bob Seger has a song called “Rock And Roll Never Forgets” (track one off Night Moves). This song has nothing to do with that song. But maybe this song can in part be described as “indie rock never forgets.” This was written after a friend’s memorial service last year. He was a musician and man of many talents, one of which was connecting with and bringing together a lot of different groups of people within the music scene. His memorial service was very emotional for lots of reasons but one reason I was unprepared for was how emotional it was to see so many people I hadn’t seen in forever show up to honor him. A lot of life happened in between visits. It was great to see them and remember our friend and our shared past. – Rick Donner
