Louis Emory – “The Siege”

Americana Highways brings you this video premiere of Louis Emory’s song “The Siege,” which is the title track of his forthcoming album. This song will be available on May 2, while the album is due out later this year. The Siege was produced by Bob Boyer and Tim Lynch; co-produced by Shelly Yakus (John Lennon, Tom Petty); mixed by Bob Boyer, Tim Lynch, and Shelly Yakus; and mastered by Peter Doell.

“The Siege” is Louis Emory on vocals and guitar; Bob Boyer on guitar, bass, drums, and percussion; Tim Lynch on keys and organ; and Georgia Jones on backing vocals.

The video was directed and edited by Raeanne Wright-Emory. Filmed on the site of Roman ruins,  the video is beautiful to watch. Inspired by helplessness watching the invasion of Ukraine from half a world away, this song was born of a desire to comfort those in wearying, miserable situations. A gentle darkness sets the pace and “I’ve been under siege for several years, with my back against the wall.” As the song builds, the mood becomes more uplifting, and Georgia Jones’ backing vocals redefine the concept of “soar.” It’s a pretty, hopeful song.

“The Siege” is the title track and first song on the forthcoming EP because it really sets the tone for the EP’s overall theme – the feeling of being in a long, arduous struggle that tests your grit and, at times, makes you question your path and your choices. I have said that I sometimes feel like Arjuna on the floor of his chariot, unsure of what to do next. In the chorus I sing, “It’s not in our stars but in our hearts!” – or, in difficult times we need a combination of self-determination and faith so that we can continue to fight for what we believe is right. The song is set in ancient times and we filmed the video at the ruins of the Roman port, Ostia Antica, but the message is also inspired by the invasion of Ukraine. I really wanted to write something for them, and anyone else, stuck in a situation that feels impossible. It’s a reminder to be strong – to not give up! – Louis Emory

Louis Emory is writing top-shelf, catchy, meaningful rock and roll songs at a time when this type of music that champions perseverance, positivity, and the human spirit is sorely lacking. He’s right up there with the best of them.  — Greg Richling, Co-Founder of Pfonetic, Former Grammy-winning bassist for The Wallflowers
