Gretta Seabird “Cycling”

Americana Highways presents this premiere of Gretta Seabird’s song “Cycling,” the title track from their forthcoming EP. The EP was produced by Brock Grenfell, Jeremiah Brunnhoelzl, and Lee McDonnell; recorded at Little Lodge; engineered and mixed by Brock Grenfell; and mastered by Dan Walker. All songs were written by Lee McDonnell and Jeremiah Brunnhoelzl.

Musicians on “Cycling” are Lee McDonnell (songwriter) on vocals; Jeremiah Brunnhoelzl on guitar, bass, keys and synth; and Brock Grenfell on beats and percussion.

Lee McDonnell’s vocals already hold a touch of musing deep within their very tone, as she sings and the music meanders and builds up and down with a sense of restraint in turns. The topic is the stirring sensations that come over us in realizing that we may be creating a new life, and it’s about honoring the beginning of new life, literally, as it bespeaks reverence for that sacred process. “I’ve been staring at the hour class, watching water boil. But you’re here now, I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it.”

This song came into my life at the time when I was confirmed with a positive pregnancy. I was excited but also in disbelief because it had taken so long in the first place. This song captures how I felt looking at the positive pregnancy test as if it was a frozen moment in time. The whole experience was like having a weird dream where imagery and events don’t line up. It didn’t feel like all flowers and butterflies in a way and that is what I wanted to capture in this song.- Lee McDonnell
