Ollella – “Mothers & Colors – Live at Studio X”

Americana Highways presents this video premiere of Ollella’s song “Mothers & Colors” from her album Antifragile, which is due to be released in March. The album was produced, engineered and mixed by Jordan Cunningham, and mastered by Adam Gonsalves.

“Mothers & Colors” changes timings with the verses in 7/8 and the choruses in 6/8 which showcases Ollella’s adept songwriting. The timing shifts dovetail with the song’s portrayal of the balancing act of motherhood, and a mother’s navigation of obligations.  Ollella tells us: “Mothers can be deeply sad–blues, purples. Mother can be considered crazy– reds, oranges. Sometimes these colors come from a chemical place due to their increased flow of hormones. Sometimes they come from a situational reality: mothers are balancing their children, their bodies, their careers, their families.”

The songs on the upcoming album Antifragile conceptually address the disarray of the world in this current moment: the uncertainty, insecurity, unpredictability and upheaval that represent the constant state of affairs. In “Mothers & Colors” we see a widespread coping mechanism that mothers carry in the face of these overwhelming stressors alongside the personal duties that must be multitasked in childrearing, care of self and space, responsibility to other family members and friends, and careers as well. All of this is carried out in a lovely, shining song.

Musicians on “Mothers & Colors” are songwriter Ellie Barber on vocals and cello; Jordan Cunningham on guitar; Nate Sharp on bass; Henry Allen on drums; and Taylor Heath on keys.

The video was directed by Andrew Ching with Director of Photography Andrew Rutherford; gaffer Quang Nguyen; camera operator Adam Lapine; and production assistant Luc Cannon. Audio engineering for the video was courtesy of Chris Rahm and it was mixed by Jordan Cunningham. Opening with dreamscape sounds and the band in darkness, the groove sets up gently and the song pays its tribute: “Orange and red, green and blue / She’s all of them, through and through / Once she split, she grew into two / How she did it, haven’t got a clue.”  Ollella is visibly in her own state of reverie on cello as she sings this truthful observation.
