Dave Murphy – “One More Time” (feat. Mark Erelli)

Dave Murphy

Americana Highways presents this premiere of Dave Murphy’s song “One More Time” (featuring Mark Erelli) from Dave’s forthcoming album A Heart So Rare, scheduled for release on January 31. The album was produced by Chris Tarrow and Dave Murphy; recorded and Mixed by Matt Shane at Joe’s Garage in Brooklyn, NY with additional recording by Shawn Pelton, Rob Clores, Chris Tarrow, Mark Erelli, Ben Wisch and Todd Caldwell. It was mastered by Fred Kevorkian.

Musicians on “One More Time” are Dave Murphy on vocals and acoustic guitar; and Mark Erelli on backing vocals, acoustic guitar and harmonica.  Good, resonant solid acoustic guitars, reflective tones and an easy flowing style characterize the music, and the message asks if there’s still enough hope, or “is it time for this old man to walk down the dusty path?”

It was the last song I wrote for the new album. The song acknowledges a door closing, but as the door is about to slam shut, I ask myself and the other person, is there still hope? I believe there is. From the second verse… “Is it too late to change our ways, or is it time to turn the page? / Still there’s love through the struggles and the strife / Is there hope in this new day and do I have the strength to say? / Together, one more time…”

Producer Chris Tarrow and I wanted the song to remain intimate. We recorded it live with me playing and singing. The great Mark Erelli added some harmony vocals and a bluesy harmonica solo… and that is the song. It’s the only song on the album without percussion.

It’s a song that touches upon aging and mortality as well, yet still asking the questions, can we make this work? From the final verse… “Is it time for this old man to make some other plans? / Is it time to go gentle in the night? / Or can we find some common ground, if there is some still around? / Together, one more time…”

I’m proud of this song. Simple, intimate and hopefully relatable. – Dave Murphy
