Alex Rasmussen – “Becoming Visible”

Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Alex Rasmussen’s song “Becoming Visible,” a co-written project with Amy Laybourn that takes lines from 12 pieces of poetry written by artists in the Seattle area and arranged them in this song.  “Becoming Visible” was recorded and mixed at Vertigo Studios in Seattle, Washington by Brad Kaminski. It was mastered by Blake Bickel of Dynamic Sound Service in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

“Becoming Visible” is Alex Rasmussen on acoustic guitar and vocals; Coleman Ayers on drums; Dune Butler on bass; Charles Wicklander on keys; Dylan Welsh on electric guitar and Fae Wiedenhoeft on harmony vocals.

This song is a poem in its own right, although its lyric lines come from a dozen different poems stitched together to form its cohesive quilt: “I’m becoming visible / Stepping out of the dark toward a bright new start.” We can all relate to times when we’ve felt overlooked and invisible, and then, there’s that cathartic release that happens when we step out to be seen again. That’s what’s captured adeptly here with motivational energy and an appealing musical arrangement.

Amy’s idea to craft lyrics using lines from poems in the anthology made the writing process feel like we were solving some intricate, melodic puzzle—taking a snippet of one poem and plugging it in here, then another and arranging it there, maybe tweaking a word or two to make each line fit the story taking shape.

Considering the speed and ease with which the pieces came together, this felt more like an exercise in serendipity than songwriting—a refreshing reminder that there are forces outside ourselves that sometimes help to steer us through the act of creativity. – Alex
