Steven Gellman – “The Road to Hana”
Americana Highways is hosting this video premiere of Steven Gellman’s song “The Road to Hana.” The music was produced, mixed, and recorded by Jim Robeson in Gaithersburg, Maryland. It was mastered by Mike Monseur at Axis Audio in Nashville.
“The Road to Hana” is Steven Gellman on ukulele and vocals; Nani Lowery on ukulele; Seth Kibel on ocarin; and Margaret Wolfe on vocals.
The video was created by Jim Robeson Productions with camera work by Ratso and Jim Robeson, with special thanks to our hula dancer Valerie Malia. Inspired by a dream trip to Hawaii, this song is quite wonderful, and sounds like an instant traditional song, somehow, with local lore and imagery built in. The ukulele and ocarina are lovely and timeless and the hula dancer embodies the tune’s fluidity.
In less than 18 days, I boarded a Hawaii-bound ship, learned to play the ukulele, purchased an ukulele in Honolulu, traversed the island of Maui along the Hana Road, and wrote a song about the experience – including an encounter with a one-eyed cat! When I returned home, I called my producer, Jim Robeson, who was able to fit me in for a recording session which was done in just one take. And for the music video, I was honored to include Hawaiian cultural ambassador Malia who choreographed and performed (on her one-day off while working on the East Coast) a custom hula dance just for the song. – Steven Gellman
