Chatham Rabbits – “Matador”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Chatham Rabbits’ song “Matador,” from their forthcoming album Be Real With Me.  This song is releasing Oct. 30th, and the album is due out Feb. 14. Be Real With Me was co-produced by Austin McCombie and Saman Khoujinian, engineered and mixed by Saman Khoujinian; and mastered by Nick Petersen.

Matador is Sarah McCombie on lead vocals;  Austin McCombie on harmony vocals’ acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and percussion;  Casey Toll on bass; and Saman Khoujinian on synth and keys.  Sarah’s voice holds an honesty that sounds like the girl next door and your best friend as she sings “I’m trying to hold it together that’s all / And bite my tongue so I don’t talk / I had more red flags than a matador / I look back now, I see what for / I lit myself on fire to keep us warm / How long can I blame this little piece of sadness on myself?”  Sometimes we need to let it go and stop blaming ourselves for giving way too often.  A pretty song.

I wrote “Matador” from a place of being equally fed up with my own shortcomings when it comes to weak boundaries, and also from a place of becoming aware that it takes two to tango. I’m not the only one responsible for the way events play out. “Matador” is for anyone who puts blinders on to ignore the red flags from others. It’s a song for anyone who wishes they would just stop with the niceties and get real and confrontational–it’s okay for those of us who are always bending to others to finally be the ones who get to stop, address an issue, and get the final say. We owe it to ourselves.- Sarah McCombie
