Steve Baskin and the Fourteens – “Love Is Hard”

Americana Highways brings you this video premiere of Steve Baskin’s song “Love Is Hard,” the title track from his recently released album.  Love Is Hard was produced by Steve Baskin and Rich Herring; mixed by Rich Herring; and recorded by Lee Davis at Lee Davis Studio in Maysville, GA with additional tracks recorded by Steve Baskin at Underground Studio in Atlanta and by Roger Brainard with horn arrangement by Baskin. The album was mastered by Alex McCullough.

“Love Is Hard” was written by Steve Baskin, Roger Brainard and Mary Gill.

“Love Is Hard” is Steve Baskin on vocals and electric guitar; Roger Brainard on lead and electric guitars; Mary Gill on background vocals; Mark Sobus on bass; Geoff Gill on drums and percussion; Lee Davis on Hammond organ; Alex Rodiek on trumpet; Ben Davis on tenor saxophone; and Wes Funderburk, trombone.

This video was filmed by Cameron Baskin and includes photography by Kevin Garrett. It was edited by Chris McErlain.  There are lots of songs about new love and falling in love, but not so many take a calm and mature adult perspective on the longer road with its twists and turns that partnerships travel.  This one does.  The song creates a satisfied feeling with its easy arrangement and meaningful perspective.  The video supplies engaging imagery with artistic embellishments of Steve playing guitar, the band on their instruments, with natural elements – thunderstorms, lightning, flowers – interspersed.  The point of it all is the long haul we take together through all kinds of relationships, revealed here with a relaxed soulful vibe.

“Love Is Hard” was the first tune we wrote for the new record, and it set the tone for everything else we wrote – both lyrically and our approach to the music. The song speaks to the idea that meaningful relationships don’t happen without some effort. It can be a difficult and messy process. But most often, the effort pays off.

The rest of the record dives into all sorts of other relationships – how my wife and have been together longer than we haven’t; an ode to my oldest son; the loss of a dear friend to depression; the result of an interesting discussion with my dad; staying in the moment – all to a soulful groove.

I grew up playing with and covering some of the greats of the 70s Soul era, and I think we were able to bring that vibe to life on this record. – Steve Baskin
