Mark Stoffel – “The Closet of Forbidden Memories”
Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Mark Stoffel’s song “The Closet of Forbidden Memories” from his forthcoming album True Tones, slated for release on October 18. True Tones was produced and mixed by Mark Stoffel and Josh Morrison, with engineering by Mark, Clay Miller, and Ben Serrat, with additional tracking by Kyle Windsock and Jens Kruger. It was mastered by Scott Barnett.
“The Closet of Forbidden Memories” is Mark Stoffel on mandolin; Ross Sermons on bass; Rob Ickes on Resophonic guitar; Chris Luquette on guitar; and Tony Creasman on drums. It’s true that some memories are forbidden, and then again, some things that folks say and do won’t ever add up and make a lick of sense. It’s this twisted situation that inspired the vibe of this instrumental song, that sports excellent playing and a driving blues groove underneath a mandolin giving off plucked pirouettes.
What to do when you come up with a bluesy riff and you feel like it’s been played many times before? I decided to double down on it and give it my own spin. The title comes directly from a rather peculiar incident in my life: An old and former friend would not return an item that was very dear to me with the explanation that it now lives in ‘the closet of forbidden memories.’ I wonder if you can catch that vibe when you listen to the tune! – Mark Stoffel
