David Luning – “Lessons”
Americana Highways brings you this video premiere of David Luning’s song “Lessons,” the title song from his upcoming release, which releases on September 6th. The album was produced, mixed and engineered by the Grammy-nominated Damien Paige Lewis (Katy Perry, Wood Brothers, Larkin Poe). Liam Nelson was assistant engineer; and it was executively produced by Redwood Shack Productions and mastered by Chris Athens.
“Lessons” is David Luning on vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and percussion; Dave Sampson on electric guitar; Ben Dubin on electric bass and harmonica; Linden Reed on drums and percussion; and Damien Lewis on percussion.
This video was directed, edited and recorded by Luning on his iPhone, with additional cinematography by Mira Dorrance-Bird. At first glance, with David in the library, you might think you’re looking at the opening of a new Wes Anderson movie – with David’s hat and the color of the books.
With low vocal tones like Ben Nichols minus the full band sound of Lucero, David delivers a dose of truth in this song. This is catchy and full of veracity. “Life lessons you gotta learn them for yourself / Life lessons, only you and no one lessons / you might’ve heard them all before and you think you know them well / but they just don’t learn a thing if you don’t learn them for yourself.”
The chorus for “Lessons” came to me a couple years before I wrote the rest of the song. I guess I didn’t feel ready to write it yet. But it always seemed to resurface now and again. Finally, in a bumpy period of self-reflection, the song said “ok now it’s time.” It was one of those rare wonderful moments that I sat down and it just spilled out. – David Lining
