The Grascals – “Jenny”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of The Grascals’ song “Jenny” from their upcoming album 20.  The album honors the band’s 20th anniversary. It was produced by The Grascals; and recorded, mixed and mastered by Clay Miller at Crossroads Studios in Arden, North Carolina. Post production was done by Clay Miller and Jeff Collins with additional mixing by Scott Barnett.

“Jenny” is Kristin Scott Benson on banjo; Danny Roberts on mandolin; Jamie Johnson on guitar and lead vocals; Terry Smith on bass and baritone vocals; John Bryan on guitar and tenor vocals; and Jamie Harper on fiddle and vocals. This is a sweet bluegrass duet with vocal harmonies vibrating closely together as the importance of making memories is heralded: “Jenny please dance with me, it’s only a short time and this song will end, but a lifetime of memories.” Listen and it’s easy to see why this sextet has played for two US Presidents, among the other feathers in their caps over the past two decades.

I wrote “Jenny” a few years back after watching a movie and the song went somewhat along with the story line. In the movie, the gal’s name was Sarah and that didn’t sound right with the lyrics so I went with Jenny. This is one of the few songs that I’ve written alone and had no co-writer involved. I love how we recorded this as a duet throughout the entire song and added Terry Smith’s spot-on baritone here and there. – Jamie Johnson
