How do we deal with frustration and stress, sorrow and grief? This song considers that question, and comes to the conclusion in the refrain “I found a way.” Don’t expect any music hand-wringing, though, this one is an abundant blues-rocker in the Bay Area Gumbo style, with a full horn section. “Ain’t no way I’m ever gonna stop unless I wind up dead! Don’t you know that I found a way!” Throw off your worries and live.
It was almost 2 years ago, shortly after my daughter Madeline was born. I was in between psychotherapy clients when suddenly I heard the lyrics/melody “Don’t you know that I. Don’t you know I found a way.” Not sleeping much with a newborn in the house, I somehow mustered the strength to sing the lyrics and melody into a voice memo app on my phone. Weeks passed before I circled back to the voice memo, but when I tried adding to the song nothing came out. I shelved the song for almost a year before the verse chords came to me while taking a walk around the neighborhood. The sleep deprivation was starting to wear off, and I was feeling very optimistic about life in general. I wanted to catalog all the things I am thankful for … including my daughter. The song “I Found A Way” is a road map for how I deal with stress, grief, and frustration. – David Noble
