Tim Shelton – “Against the Wind”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Tim Shelton’s version of the Bob Seger song “Against the Wind,” from the forthcoming compilation and tribute album with contributions by various artists: Silver Bullet Bluegrass. Silver Bullet Bluegrass was produced by Randall Deaton, engineered by Randall Deaton and Jimmy Nutt; recorded and mixed in Lonesome Day Recording Studio in Booneville, KY and at the NuttHouse Recording Studio in Muscle Shoals, AL. This album was recorded over a timeframe of nearly 10 years.
“Against The Wind” is Tim Shelton on vocals; Stephen Mougin and Gary Nichols on guitars; Shawn Brock on mandolin; Ned Luberecki on banjo; Mike Bub on bass; Megan Lynch on fiddle; Wayne Bridge on dobro; and Tim Shelton and Gary Nichols on harmony vocals. Tim’s rich baritone vocal tones lob this one up by the net for a bluegrass spike and the chilling chorus that’s part of our collective unconsciousness: “against the wind, we were running against the wind, we were young and strong and we were running against the wind.”
I had worked with Randall on a Jackson Browne tribute record of mine and he asked me around that time if I wanted to sing on the Seger tribute project. ‘Against The Wind’ is one of my very favorite Seger tunes. Even though I do not have any direct connections to Seger, I have always loved his music and consider him a musical influence. – Tim Shelton
I had been very aware of Tim Shelton for many years through his tremendous work with the band Newfound Road. In 2014 Tim approached me about a concept record idea that he had to do a full album of Jackson Browne songs. We enlisted producer Paul Kolderie who I had worked with on the Girls Guns and Glory record “Sweet Nothings.” After hearing how great Tim handled Jackson Browne I knew that he was the one for “Against The Wind.” Tim brought just the right amount of country flavor to what is arguably Seger’s best ballad. – Randall Deaton, album producer AND President of Lonesome Day Records
