Mabilene – “Sycamore Tree”
Americana Highways presents this premiere of Mabilene’s song “Sycamore Tree” from her forthcoming EP Liminal. Liminal was produced by Johnny Hanson and Mabilene; mixed by Johnny Hanson and mastered by Casey Wood. This song will be available on July 12, and the album will be released later this fall.
“Sycamore Tree” is Mabilene on vocals and Johnny Hanson on acoustic guitar. Sung in the sweet voice of reflection and soul-searching, this song is stirring and thoughtful. The song is about a restless spirit buried beneath a sycamore tree, beckoning to tell the tale: “Meet me down by the sycamore tree, follow the rising of the morning, buried beneath the earth at her fault, I have only bones to tell my story.” The tale is told by just a voice full of richness that sings like the evening wind, and a soulful acoustic guitar.
In the summer of 2020, like many, I found myself reflecting on the history of cruelty in America. How can there be so much good with such fierce veins of violence? How do we learn compassion or disdain? It seems like hate is something that can be passed down through generations like a facial feature. I was messing around on the guitar and had a vision of a large, beautiful tree in a vast field in Georgia. Beneath it was the unmarked grave of a restless spirit – their story carried on the wind to anyone close enough and willing to hear. There was a restlessness for a world unchanging and a longing to return home. This was truly one of those songs that I feel was written through me and not by me. – Mabilene
