David Newbould – “Sweet Virginia Morn”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of David Newbould’s song “Sweet Virginia Morn” from his album Sin & Redemption. This song is a live version of the song from David’s recent tour in Germany and it was recorded by Jürgen Bleeckmann, produced and mixed by David Newbould, and mastered by Alex McCollough for True East Mastering. 

“Sweet Virginia Morn” is David Newbould solo on vocals and acoustic guitar.  This song about parenthood and the profound responsibility of the relationship between parent and child.  The lyrical conversation is relatable, significant and profound as hell.  The lyrics capture a dialogue that falls into honest territory, and the solo acoustic nature of this recording supports the frailty of the whole human condition that’s encapsulated here.

This was one of our favorite songs to work on for my Sin & Redemption album. I loved reinterpreting it as a solo acoustic number over in Europe! A lot of times people look up to other people and think they have all the answers. Then they ask the question and the person tries to come up with answers, ultimately ending up with more questions of their own. “Sweet Virginia Morn” is a story about that, from a kid to his mother. I think it’s something about evidence that life is a lot of questions and not a whole lot of answers no matter how far into it you get. I was with my son over in Germany a couple of years ago, and I missed the hell out of him on this tour when I was back over there and he was home in Nashville with his mom. I ended up thinking of him every night when I did this song, and sang it in his honor, a song about a kid and his mother. – David Newbould
