Nick Dunbar – Little Country

Nick Dunbar has a recently released album Little Country. It’s an album of honky tonk rhythms and pedal steel swirls from this Colorado-based throwback county musician and songwriter who grew up in California.  There are plentiful Western country and old swing elements shared within these tunes, which results in a very pleasing listening experience.

“Behind the Bar” is an uptempo country ode to the wonderful bartender, with the tongue-in-cheek: “oh pretty girl, they picked you out of the sky, of all the things we’ve done and said, I cannot call you mine.”

“Hanging By a Thread” is an older style Classic Western swing song with old timey images like a riverboat, “need a little love, can I get a little more.”   “Supposed to Be Praying” slows things down a bit, with acoustic guitar and a little bit of a ballad feel as we mourn lost love with lovely harmonies: “supposed to be praying but I’m drinking instead.”

“Outskirts” is a fun, kick up your heels song about having a little nipper in your pocket, “come and smoke it.” It’s really a hoot. Accordion rolls in to introduce the next number, in a throwback style waltz: “Better Make It Two.”

This whole album is a carefree listen, with songs that are catchy, straightforward, gratifying and easy to identify with. Find it anywhere on streaming services.  Little Country was produced by Greg Schochet; recorded and mixed by Aaron Younberg of Swing Finger Studios; and mastered by David Glasser of Airshow.

Musicians on the album are Nick Dunbar on acoustic guitar and lead vocals; Greg Schochet on electric guitar; Dusty Rider pedal steel; Eric Thorin on upright bass; Damon Smith on drums and harmony vocals;
John Magnie on organ and accordion; and Curly Collins and Monica Labonte on harmony vocals.
