Parker Smith – “Surround Sound”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Parker Smith’s song “Surround Sound” from his forthcoming album Short Street, which is set to release on June 7.  Short Street was produced and mixed by Colin Agnew, and mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service.

“Surround Sound” is Parker Smith on guitar and vocals; Casey Harper on background vocals; and
Michael Feinberg on upright bass.  This song sounds just like some old fingerpicked folk blues, the kind Old and In the Way used to play.  Very thoughtful and a bit of a little lullaby, and the vocal harmonies are high and sweet.  Sometimes it’s best just to detach, unwind, and “let the sound surround.”

There’s a great Family Guy bit about Randy Newman singing about everything he sees. While the bit is making fun of Newman, there’s some truth to it. I think there’s value in focusing on creating awareness during the songwriting process. By observing the outside world and receiving clues, you’re required to stay present and be open to inspiration. This was my attempt at that, and a more abstract attempt at storytelling. Hopefully, it conveys a feeling that the listener can relate to. I live on a street in Atlanta with a lot of activity. Our street doesn’t have any speed bumps because it is an emergency route for fire trucks and ambulances. There are times when it can be chaotic and loud, but I enjoy listening to the sounds when everything is quiet.

As far as the other instruments, Michael has been a longtime collaborator over the years and I knew I wanted some upright bass on this track. This is a delicate song and Casey adds such softness and warmth to the melody with her vocals. They both added a lot to the tune. – Parker Smith
