Mills and Co “Pink Moon”
Americana Highways is hosting this video premiere of Mills and Co’s version of the song “Pink Moon” written by Nick Drake, from the band’s forthcoming album due later this year. This album was produced, engineered and mixed by Steve McCormick; co-produced with Ali Mills; and mastered by Ron Boustead.
“Pink Moon” is Ali Mills on vocals, acoustic guitar, and Omnichord; Steve McCormick on electric guitar, slide guitar, B3 pedal, and backing vocals; and Heather Donavon on crystal singing bowls, backing vocals, Zaphir chimes, and Wave. This
This version of the song is lovely and ethereal. It’s a modern day high frequency take on a song that was quite moving in the original as well, but this takes it to a contemporary place with singing bowls in the mix. It’s just what a cover song should do. Without a drum track, and with a glorious spaciousness in the recording, the song is as expansive and lush as a full moonlight landscape, and releasing in honor of and on the occasion of this year’s pink moon. The mostly lyric video was created by Steve McCormick and Ali Mills. Singing bowls, chimes, acoustic guitar strings and a match lit in the dark set the stage, and a pink moon is on it way by Ali’s heavenly vocals with beautiful harmonies by Love Me in the Dark.
“Pink Moon” is a somewhat sacred song to songwriters and folk musicians alike. The decision to cover it was not cursory. Being in the harmonic presence of sound bowls during a full moon is something I think all should experience at some point in their lives. Our reimagined “Pink Moon” aims to recreate that magic. Working alongside Love Me in the Dark was an absolute pleasure and we look forward to our next collaboration. – Ali Mills
