Paul Nourigat – “Assumed It Would Happen”
Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Paul Nourigat’s song “Assumed It Would Happen,” from his forthcoming album Smiles That Pass By. The album was mixed and mastered by Adam Selzer.
“Assumed It Would Happen” is Paul Nourigat on vocals; Paul Brainard on lap steel; Ji Tanzer on drums; Adam Selzer on bass; and Anna B on backing vocals. Memories are such an odd phenomenon. Living in the moment, events and experiences seem so significant and it feels like those we share them with are just as significant and enduring, but, in hindsight so much changes and some of those folks leave our lives completely. Including our closest friends and lovers. Paul covers this sentiment in his nostalgic, yet honest and unsentimental style with a breezy acoustic arrangement. It is what it is: “It was what it was and we can’t go back… just assumed it would happen again and again.”
I wrote “Assumed It Would Happen” to capture the feeling of fleeting magical moments in our lives, which we did not imagine – at the time – would never happen again. The lover, the child, the parent, or friend we were with, the event we shared with them that is now but a memory.
Early in my life I assumed it would happen, again and again. Now, closer to my end than my beginning, my aha-moment/life-lesson shared through this song is to relish these special experiences and relationships – as they happen, and yet also bask in the glow of their memories. Each of the ten songs on “Smiles That Pass By” offer such aha-moments, through the experiences gleaned from my six decades on this good earth😊 – Paul Nourigat
