Cash & Carter – No Use Praying

Hailing from the UK, Cash & Carter are releasing a new EP this week, No Use Praying, produced by Ross O’Reilly, mixed by Desmond Lambert, and mastered by Emily Lazar and Chris Allgood at The Lodge.

Cash & Carter are English duo musician Shaun Smith (Stealth) from Birmingham, and London producer, singer and writer Ross O’ Reilly.

Title track “No Use in Praying” will hook you pretty quickly with the soaring entwining vocals this duo is able to throw down.  “Nobody’s going to part that water for you, nobody’s gonna stop the falling rain….”  In the midst of the mid-tempo Americana style, the duo is somehow also able to channel the power that is usually reserved for soul singers.

“Americana (Letting Her Go)” is a big sound recording, in a song about getting past “Americana” who was trying to make her escape, with a healthy dose of cynicism, and how it feels to try to write music post-Americana style.  “All Of the Way” is a loping number identifying the fact that we all get lost and led astray, but some of our closest relationships remain.  Big chorus effects make for a lofty indie result on this one.

In “Ballad of Talulah” it’s a heartfelt plea for someone to keep you company and a person who is quite genuinely in it for the money. “Don’t waste my time boy, get to the back of the line boy, because they all want to save me right until they pay me, then it’s home to their wives.”  Ouch.

“Just Like Heaven” is a slowed down interpretation of the Cure song, well worth the listen.

This EP is building on a foundation of Americana style music with an eye to forging the way into “post-Americana.” Really cool.

Vocals on the album are by Cash & Carter, Shaun Smith, and Ross O’Reilly; with instruments by Ross O’Reilly and backing vocals by Shaun Smith, Ross O’Reilly, and Sam Martin.
