Laura Zarougian – “Buckskin Coat”

Americana Highways is hosting this video premiere of Laura Zarougian’s song “Buckskin Coat” from her recently released album Nayri.  Nayri was produced by Laura Zarougian, Michael Alan Hams and Sean Walsh.  It was recorded and mixed by Sean Walsh at South 1st Sound in Brooklyn, NY, with assistant engineering by Kelsey Tadin. The album photography was courtesy of Maryanne Braine with design layout by Owen Streeter and album artwork by Laura Zarougian.

“Buckskin Coat” is Laura Zarougian on vocals and acoustic guitar; Michael Alan Hams on vocals and drums; Sean Walsh on acoustic and electric guitars; and Matthew Stoulil on bass.

The video was shot and directed by Christian Motos of NOSUCHVideos.  The allure of the coat we can’t afford, of the wonderful coat with fringe that sways too and fro, the one that was featured in the movie Easy Rider and on Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix and Margo Price, yeah, that’s the star of the song.  And with Laura dancing in the cafe Brooklyn Kolache after hours and playing guitar in the back the video really brings a degree of comfort and familiarity to the song.  Catchy and imaginable.

When deciding where to film the music video for “Buckskin Coat,” Brooklyn Kolache was the obvious choice. I spent countless hours there—on and off the clock—hosting open mics in the backroom; holding pre-production meetings with Mike, my collaborator, drummer and now husband; and meeting Sean, the recording engineer and co-producer, who was a regular customer (two sausage-jalapeño kolaches and a large iced coffee). My latte art was maybe a bit lopsided, but I always loved playing the deep cuts through the morning rush. Christian Motos, the video’s director, came to me via Mike, who has had a decades-long relationship making music videos and short films together.
