Reckless Son — “Time To Be A Man”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Reckless Son’s song “Time to be a Man,” from his forthcoming album Reckless Son Pt 1, which is due to be released early in 2023. Reckless Son Pt 1 was produced, mixed and engineered by Doug Schadt, and mastered by Joe Lambert.
“Time To Be A Man” is Matt Butler on vocals, acoustic and electric guitars; Doug Schadt on keyboards, organ, and bass.
Butler has played show for those behind bars — at Ohio’s Chillicothe Correctional Institution, Utah’s Gunnison Prison and the New York City Department of Corrections facilities on Rikers Island. This song is a portrayal of some of the experiences from these shows and reflecting on what it means to be imprisoned. As he says, this song wasn’t written for the imprisoned, it was written for those who haven’t been lucky enough to experience them.
Hardship, pressure to drink and experiment with drugs, and having to hustle just to survive are the story lines, and Matt Butler’s gritty, powerful voice will carry you to the hard places where the hard choices dwell. Let’s all hope for better chances.
“Time To Be A Man” is about taking responsibility for your own life. It’s taking an idea that’s been turned into a punchline and reclaiming it as something affirming and meaningful.
