Listen & Watch Video Premieres

Americana Highways presents this premiere of Sarah Jane Nelson’s video “Every Other Weekend” from her album I’m Not Broken.  The album was produced and mixed by Brian Irwin of Monster Studios (East Nashville, TN).  Mastering was by Pete Lyman, Infrasonic Sound (Brandi Carlile, Chris Stapleton).  The song will be available on Friday.  “Every Other Weekend” is Sarah Jane Nelson, Daniel Donato (The Wild Feathers, The Don Kelley Band) on electric guitar; Brian Irwin on acoustic guitar, drums, bass, mandolin, and banjo; Smith Curry (Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Taylor Swift) on pedal steel; Kurt Ozan (Luke Combs, Jana Kramer) on dobro; Andrea Young (Farewell Angelina, Jana Kramer, Lady Antebellum) on violin; and Melodie Chase (Brandi Carlile, Jessie James Decker) on vocals.

Tackling one of the most painful of human situations, Sarah Jane Nelson sings the pain of shared child custody. The footage for the video highlights the bittersweet elements of the experience.  Nelson’s new album is a languid mix of celebration and the sweetest of sorrows.

When I became a single mom, I went from being with my kids every single day to having them 50% of the time. I knew that divorce was the right choice given the circumstances, but this was such a painful shift. When I didn’t have my kids, I didn’t know who I was. As I started writing the songs for this record, I wrote very honestly about the challenges I was facing and those that other single parents around me were going through as well. This song was a co-write with Mary Bragg and my kids and their friends were running in and out of the house while we wrote in the living room. That energy was actually a wonderful background for the story we were telling. I hope that “Every Other Weekend” helps other single parents know that they are not alone on the rollercoaster of co-parenting. Eventually, I found myself through therapy, reflection, spirituality, and songwriting. This record healed me in many ways and it feels great to finally share it with the world. — Sarah Jane Nelson

  1. Thank you so much for premiering my new video! Every Other Weekend is a song that I wrote at a time I was really struggling with co-parenting. I hope your readers enjoy it and take comfort that they are not alone in the ups and downs of single parent life! Sincerely, Sarah Jane
