As Kevin tells us, about the song: “I would often introduce this song on stage by saying it’s about that special time of the year in Northern California when your dirtbag friends suddenly have a brand new dirt bike and a whole lot less worries. It’s a Northern California harvest song that I wrote behind the wheel, driving down highway 101 with cash for six months worth of rent in my back packet and the hope in my heart that I had working tail lights and up-to-date registration.
“I don’t think it’s any secret right now how hard it can be for working folks to get ahead in America (and California in particular), but there used to be a time before Cannabis production became legalized, commoditized, and corporatized, when lot’s of honest hard working independent producers took a gamble to make a living around the fringes of legality. If you lived in the hills north of San Francisco for any extended time you’ve probably encountered some aspect of this world whether you knew it or not. It ain’t all a feel good story, but every year you could feel the collective sigh of relief when folks made it through the season to that proverbial, (no pun intended) pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.”
Harmonica opens the song followed by laid back guitar, with a cool scene in the video: a 70s image with an elderly beige car, Kevin with his mustaches and ball cap, and the nostalgia and an air of human struggle cut straight through. The song’s easy old timey rhythm carries us through the haze of resignation and truth telling about having to get by under the radar.
