Iguana Death Cult “I Like It, It’s Nice”

Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Dutch punk band Iguana Death Cult’s song “I Like It, It’s Nice” from their forthcoming album Guns Out. The album was produced and mixed by Simon Akkermans at Epic Rainbow Unicorn Studio and mastered by Frederik Dejongh.

“I Like It, It’s Nice” is  Jeroen Reek on guitar and lead vocals; Tobias Opschoor on guitar;  Jimmy de Kok on keys and percussion; Uri Rennert on drums and  Alec Todd on bass.

Americana Highways: “I Like It, It’s Nice” is built around a playful, bass-heavy groove, but critiques themes like consumerism, late-stage capitalism, and existential dread. Was this your intention when making the song?

Jeroen Reek: No, not at all. It was just one of those things that sounded good and had a groove to it. When the music was there I asked myself, what could this song be about? Are we just gonna sing a song about stuff we like? And that it’s nice? Who are we, Julie Andrews? Then I thought ‘like’ has become such a symbol of instant gratification in a world where morality is thinning and greed is at an all time high, so I bent it more into that direction.

AH:  Guns Out sees Iguana Death Cult returning to a more punchy, in-your-face garage rock sound after the more art-punk-leaning Echo Palace. What motivated that shift, and how did it feel reconnecting with your early punk and garage roots?

JR: After we decided on writing a fourth album, we asked ourselves: what do we love most about this band? And that had to be the live shows. The main goal was to make a record that we’re excited to play live from start to finish.

AH: Across Guns Out, themes like escapism, mental strain, and creative renewal come up repeatedly. Why did this feel like the right moment for the band to make a more introspective and self-reflective record?

JR: It didn’t feel like the moment, it was the moment more or less. Two of our childhood buddies just left the band, we entered our thirties, it’s getting harder and harder to do this music thing due to inflation and a slowly decaying music industry, meanwhile the world is on fire once again. It makes one feel very confused. Makes you feel like you’re at the crossroads you know?
