Sara Jean Kelley and Matthew Perryman Jones “Slow and Steady”

Americana Highways presents this premiere of Sara Jean Kelley and Matthew Perryman Jones’ video performance of their co-written song “Slow and Steady.” This recording of the song was produced and mixed by Jared Colby and mastered by Preston Cochran.

Musicians on “Slow and Steady” are Sara Jean Kelley on vocals; Matthew Perryman Jones on guitar and backing vocals; Jared Colby on guitar and bass; and Jason Goforth on lap steel.

The video was filmed and edited by William Price, III. This is a timeless song about abandoning the inner obstacles and the clenching of stress, stay alert but also let things flow: “What have I been missing / Let the wind carry me home / Moving like water through the stone / Carving the earth beneath my bones.” Thoughtful and emotionally vulnerable, this song will merge with your thoughts, carried along with gentle acoustic guitar and unimpeachable vocals.

MPJ and I wrote this song just days before the pandemic hit in 2020. At a time that seemed so exciting and rife with possibilities, the only thing to do was write a song about embracing the unknown and opening ourselves up to the world around us. Little did we both know that the complete opposite was about to happen. Of course, the world shutting down brought on a whole new meaning to the song; especially as things started opening up again. Now, as I think back on the time and the subsequent years, I know more now than ever, that it was the perfect song to write at the perfect time. So much has changed in the last 4.5 years, and I’m forever grateful for songs like this that remind me to “move like water through the stones” – slow and steady. Sara Jean Kelley
