Chris Williams and Kid Reverie “Haunt Me”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Chris Williams and Kid Reverie (Gregory Alan Isakov)’s song “Haunt Me” from their forthcoming album, set for release later this year. The album was produced, mixed, and engineered by Andrew Berlin (The Blasting Room), and mastered by Dave Wilton (Coalesce Audio).
“Haunt Me” is Chris Williams on lead vocals, keyboards, synth, and guitar; Kid Reverie on piano and background vocals; John Paul Grigsby on bass; Max Barcelow on drums; and Russick Smith on cello.
As Steve Varney (Kid Reverie) tells us, about “Haunt Me” : “Some songs refuse to fit into a generic song structure. Chris came to me one day with the intro to “Haunt Me” and I got chills. The mournful descending brass and woodwinds immediately hypnotized me and we started throwing out ideas for the remainder of the song. What developed was basically three different motifs. I tend to call these “odyssey songs.” No verses, no chorus, but different chapters that jerk the listener around a little bit. I always value the unpredictable nature of songs like this. You never know when they’re gonna present themselves, but I always love when they do.”
Suspense is the key to recreating a haunting feeling, and Chris Williams and Kid Reverie provide suspense and a restrained foundation in the opening measures for this song, which then presses forward with synths, cello, woodwinds, brass, as the song climbs in delicious crescendo. Drums enter the consortium to provide more certainty, and the mood changes, but not permanently, as we are guided back down to a hush.
