Mike Delevante “Adelaine (September Days)”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Mike Delevante’s song “Adelaine (September Days)” the title track from his forthcoming album September Days, which is set for release on April 11. September Days was produced and mixed by Joe Pisapia (Guster), engineered by Joe Costa, and recorded at Middletree Studios. This is Mike’s first solo album outside group The Delevantes, who were renowned for their Byrd-esque guitar melodies. The Delevantes toured with folks like John Prine, Emmylou Harris and more. A few years later, it’s now a treat to listen to Mike’s individual musical perspective here on this album.
“Adelaine (September Days)” is Mike Delevante on vocals, 6 and 12-string electric guitar and acoustic guitar; Joe Pisapia on electric guitar and keyboards; Garry Tallent (E Street Band) on bass; and Jamie Dick on drums and percussion.
The song starts out with imagery flowing by – of the days getting longer, and of that hazy uncertainty of waiting for someone to return who is, sadly, not likely to come. Mike has somehow been able to meld together a palpable feeling of sorrowful longing that accompanies the end of summer, and the wistful foreboding of the return to institutions and responsibilities that comes with fall, with a feeling of loss of someone who was loved. It’s really uncanny.
The changing of seasons is much more monumental at a young age. Memorial Day, summer begins. Labor Day, school is back. We can almost remember each one. Time moved slowly and each change in the season marked the beginning and ending of something that seemed so big in our lives. The songs, the movies, the clothes form a time capsule. In writing this album, faces and events came rushing at me. The close of winter into spring was the drumroll into the best time of the year: summer. But what if that meant the prospect of losing someone? That’s the story of “Adelaine (September Days).” – Mike Delevante
