Sarah Quintana – “be my love”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Sarah Quintana’s song “be my love,” just in time for Valentine’s Day from her forthcoming album Baby Don’t, which is due to be available on March 28. Baby Don’t was produced by Sarah Quintana and Liana Cockfield, mixed by Eric Heigle at WixMix Productions with assistance from Maria Paula Mariño; and it was mastered by Don Goodwin at Tonal Park in Takoma Park, Maryland. The album was recorded by Justin Tockett at Dockside Studios, Rick Nelson at Marigny Studios, Mark Bingham at Piety Studios and Emily Mikesell.
Musicians on “be my love” are Sarah Quintana on vocals, electric guitar and acoustic guitar; Rose Cangelosi on drums, percussion, and harmony vocals; Rex Gregory on saxophones, flute and clarinet; Jason Jurzak on sousaphone; Chris Beroes-Haigis on cello; Leyla McCalla on vocals and banjo; Emily Mikesell on trumpet and coronet; Louis Michot on fiddle; and Corey Ledet on accordion.
This song is set in a ragtime style and “be my, be my, be my love” is catchy as all get out. The music is festive with a thrilling parade of uncommon instruments: a clarinet solo just before “the waltz-in’ dancin'” request, the sousaphone in turn does serious work in its punctuated appearances, and there’s an astonishing, stupendous trumpet celebration as well, all as Sarah sings and plays with ease. It’s a ragtime jubilee with each instrument taking a turn in the spotlight: banjo, tuba, accordion, trumpet, cello, fiddle, clarinet and guitars.
Happy Valentine’s Day New Orleans-style! ‘Be My Love’ is a ragtime song written for guitar (Sarah), featuring meandering clarinet solo (Rex Gregory), syncopated vocal harmonies (Rose Cangelosi), a happy tuba (Jason Jurzak), Cello (Chris Beroes- Haigis) and a ripping trumpet tailgate by Emily Mikesell. Eric Heigle did a fantastic job on the mix, creating musical moments where the ear is in constant motion from one sound to the next, like a sonic parade. – Sarah
