Rakish – “Lonely Hotel Room”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of folk duo Rakish’s song “Lonely Hotel Room” from their forthcoming album Now, O Now. Now, O Now is set to be available on October 11. The album was produced by Rakish; recorded by Eli Crews at Spillway Sounds; mixed by Dave Sinko; and mastered by Dan Cardinal.
“Lonely Hotel Room” is Maura Shawn Scanlin on fiddle, clawhammer banjo, and vocals; Conor Hearn on guitars; and Dylan McKinstry on percussion and electric bass. Layers of mid-tempo but lively music set the atmosphere and prompt you to quicken your step to skip along. Maura’s throaty vocals are striking and “we’re getting older, but we’ve still got time… won’t you talk to me? Help me to see that a lonely hotel room isn’t the only place I belong.” Brimming with longing, this song hits the emotional bulls-eye.
I wrote this song – you guessed it – when I was stuck in a hotel room, sick, while on tour. It’s a song about the things that help us digest the passage of time and the changes that come with it. Dreaming about the future, appreciating friendships, hearing a familiar voice on the telephone…those are a couple of the things that can lift me up if I’m down.
We had a fun time recording this one, deciding last-minute to add a fiddle solo, and adding the beautiful musicianship of Dylan McKinstry on percussion and bass…Conor plays a bit of electric guitar, too. The result is a pretty new sound for us, and we had a good time letting this one evolve! – Maura Shawn Scanlin
