Jake Neuman and the Jaybirds – “Saved”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Jake Neuman and the Jaybirds’ song “Saved” from their forthcoming EP Little Bitty Town, due to be released on June 14. Little Bitty Town was produced, recorded and mixed by Greg D. Griffith at Peacedale Studios.
“Saved” is Jake Neuman on vocals and guitar; Tony Leone on drums; Jeff Hill on bass; William Wallace on keys; and Greg Griffith on guitar and pedal steel.
Americana Highways had a chance to chat very briefly with Jake about the song. The premiere appears just beneath this interview.
Americana Highways: What is this song about?
Jake Neuman: I had recently moved to Nashville, and at the time, my life was so chaotic that I had no idea what to do. I knew I wanted to make music but had no real prospects of doing it at the time. That’s actually where the first line came from, “Where the hell’s the fire, and what’s the hurry about?”
AH: Who/what were some influences when it came to writing the song?
JN: When writing this tune, I was heavily influenced by Tyler Childers, Jason Isbell, and Chris Knight. I wanted an Isbell-style story song. The way these writers craft a story has always enraptured me.
AH: Any interesting stories about writing/recording this song “Saved”?
JN: This was actually the first song I wrote when I moved to Nashville. My wife and music partner, McCaslin Blue, helped me pen this one. I remember having the first line and pacing around my backyard for about 45 minutes like a crazy person until I had something resembling a verse. By the time I had put that together, she had already come up with this huge chorus idea that I was in love with! Also, all the reverbs on this recording are from an old concrete bomb shelter in my producer Greg Griffith’s house, where we recorded the record. He piped the vocals in there and recorded it; sounds amazing and perfect for the mood of the song.
This is quite a beautiful song, with soul-stirring vocals by Jake and haunting effects on the vocal chorus, not to mention a sincere lyrical depth. Soon Jake Neuman will be playing alongside his songwriting inspirations, mark it down.
