Gary Hector – “Waitin’ Around To Go Viral”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Gary Hector’s song “Waiting Around To Go Viral,” from his forthcoming album Memphis Medicine. Memphis Medicine was recorded at Dirt Floor Studio in Connecticut. It was produced by Eric M Lichter; engineered by Guido Falivene and Elijah Novicky; and mastered by Steve Wytas. The cover photo was taken by Abigail Hadeed and the album art design was by Nicholas Huggins.
“Waitin’ Around To Go Viral” is Gary Hector on vocals and songwriting; Eric M Lichter on drums, piano, organ, guitars, pedal steel guitar and backing vocals. Gary is from Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, which gives him a unique vantage point on the world, although his old style country instincts are honed into a style that sounds like echoes of Willie Nelson on the beach. This song is a tale of a musician headed out on the road, having to tell his love: “look I’m sorry, but I’ve got to go,” as the tale takes a whimsical turn with the realization that playing your own songs, whether they fit into a popular mode, that might be better than waiting around to go viral, despite what everyone around you seems to be doing. It’s presented in a lighthearted manner, but the observation is significant and true.
The song title borrows from, and is also a nod to, Townes Van Zandt’s “Waitin’ Around to Die,” which in today’s world of social media and smartphones, both titles mean the same to me. – Gary Hector
