Annie Gallup “Book of Cliches”
Americana Highways brings you this video premiere of Annie Gallup’s song “Book of Cliches” from her forthcoming album Nightclothes, which is set for release on June 2. Nightclothes was produced and recorded by Annie Gallup at Small Dog at Large in Rockland, Maine; mixed by Peter Gallway at Gallway Bay Music in Rockland; and mastered by Michael McInnis for MMP in Portland, Maine.
“Book of Cliches” is Annie Gallup on vocals, Gibson Blueshawk guitar and Asher lap steel; and Peter Gallway on bass.
As Annie tells us about her song “Book of Cliches,” “I have been asked if my story songs are autobiographical. The answer is emphatically “not really.” They are collaged from details imagined, observed, experienced, overheard… the characters and stories are composites. I’m not interested in history as it happened as much as I am in telling a story that has resonance. If I were to write my actual autobiography it would be random and disjointed, like I opened the book of cliches and just pointed. Seriously.
“The video is also a collage, made from found and original footage, referencing the lyrics and emotion of the song. I’ve been sidelined from touring for many years with chronic Lyme, so I make videos as a way to keep sending my songs out into the world.”
This video was edited by Annie Gallup, from footage shot by Annie Gallup and licensed found footage.
Annie Gallup has a way with words and lyrics in her songs, that express something so human in a completely unique and poetic way. In “Book of Cliches,” the story unfold this way: “Found you at one of those parties, then later / Lost you at another, our worn-out joke: It was all the same party, it went on and on / On and on and on until we broke.” Her vocals emanate reverence and honesty and the overall effect is pure beauty.
